United Way of the Midlands Tocqueville Society - Established in 1988 to recognize outstanding philanthropy, the society is named after the Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, who wrote extensively about the unique character of American society - liberty, equality, and the spirit of "neighbor helping neighbor." The Alexis de Tocqueville Society recognizes annual gifts of $10,000 or more, and currently has 271 members.
