Why This Matters: The Need Is Growing

Food insecurity means limited or uncertain access to enough nutritious food to support an active, healthy life. But for many families, it does not happen in isolation.

  • It shows up when grocery costs rise. 
  • It shows up when rent takes too much of a paycheck.
  • It shows up when utility bills spike.
  • It shows up when a family has to choose between food, housing, transportation, medicine or childcare.

Groceries are getting harder to afford, and too many families across the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro are being forced to make difficult choices. 

For many households, food is where the sacrifices begin. 

At the same time, the organizations serving our community are facing pressure, too. Across the local nonprofit network, partners are seeing increased demand while also navigating higher food costs and more difficulty keeping pantry shelves stocked. 

Some of our largest pantries are receiving up to 15% less food, even as demand continues to rise.

  • Nearly 24% of adults in the metro say it is difficult to buy affordable fresh food.

Behind these numbers are parents trying to stretch a grocery budget, older adults managing health needs on a fixed income and working families doing everything they can to stay stable.

*The gift card recipient will be selected at random after the campaign ends and contacted by United Way of the Midlands. Gift card has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for cash. United Way of the Midlands employees and immediate family members are not eligible. Those who donate between now and June 29, 2026 will be automatically entered to win.
