990 FORMS

The 990 form is a tax return required for most public charities to submit to the IRS.

Information contained in the form includes a summary of the organization’s activities, assets, receipts, expenditures and compensation of directors, officers and certain employees. Failure to submit the form may result in revocation of an organization’s nonprofit status.

An independent audit is an examination of the financial records, accounts, business transactions, accounting practices and internal controls of a charitable nonprofit.

Not all charitable nonprofits are required to complete a financial audit. The Wise Giving Alliance has a $250,000 annual revenue threshold for audits, while the Standards of Excellence Institute‘s threshold is $300,000. The Independent Sector recommends a threshold of $1 million dollars.

Because of its size, commitment to transparency and expectations from funders, UWM hires licensed, certified public accountants to perform an audit each year. This audit is made publicly available.
