Giving From the Heart Award

The Suzanne Scott Giving from the Heart Award was created to honor Suzanne Scott. Every two years, the award is presented to a woman in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area who demonstrates the thoughtful and philanthropic qualities evident in Sue – her drive to care, inspire and act.

Karen is also very active with her church, Morning Star Lutheran. Since first volunteering at age 14, she has never stopped being involved with her faith community. Currently, she is chairing the capital campaign in support of their remodel project.

A third-generation Omaha resident, Karen met her husband, Kim, as students at Westside High School. As someone who has always had a wide range of interests, Karen started her college experience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a focus on child psychology. She then pursued nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and ultimately received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

While Karen’s commitment to the community is exemplified in her unwavering service and dedication, first and foremost, nothing is more important to her than family. Karen and Kim are the proud parents of three children, Kim Hawkins Jr. (Amy), Chris Hawkins (Kayla) and Ande Johnson (Adam) – and they have been blessed with 10 grandchildren – Riley, Addison and Kim Hawkins III; Jack, Colin, Hunter and Ben Hawkins; and Alex, Jo and Jacob Johnson. Family, faith and community are truly at the heart of Karen’s values.
