United Way of the Midlands Launches Weatherization Assistance Program for Douglas County, Helping Low-Income Households Save Energy and Improve Safety

United Way of the Midlands (UWM) is excited to announce its collaboration with the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) on the launch of the Weatherization Assistance Program (Weatherization) in Douglas County. This important initiative is designed to help low-income households improve energy efficiency, reduce utility costs and enhance health and safety within the home.

The Weatherization program provides free energy-efficiency services to qualifying households, thanks to funding from the U.S. Departments of Energy and Health and Human Services. Households that meet eligibility requirements will receive a comprehensive home energy audit, followed by improvements to reduce energy consumption. These improvements can include adding insulation, sealing windows and doors and addressing potential indoor air quality and safety hazards, such as carbon monoxide or combustion issues.

In addition to energy-saving measures, the program emphasizes the health and safety of residents by evaluating homes for potential hazards, including air quality and combustion safety. Following the assessment, trained crews will complete a work order that details the necessary improvements, including energy-efficient upgrades and any health and safety measures required. A certified inspector verifies that all work is completed to ensure the home is safer, healthier and more energy-efficient for the residents.

UWM’s 211 Helpline is now accepting Weatherization applications for households in Douglas County. The 211 Helpline will also assist with determining eligibility for the program, making it easier for families in need to access this vital service.
“We are proud to collaborate with NDEE to bring the Weatherization Assistance Program to Douglas County,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “This program not only helps families reduce their energy costs but also creates safer, healthier homes. We encourage eligible households to apply and take advantage of this valuable service.”
