On Monday, January 15, United Way of the Midlands (UWM) invites members of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro to commemorate and celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a number of events throughout the day.
The day will kick off with the 6th Annual MLK Day Breakfast at the Venue at the Highlander, 2120 N. 30th Street, Omaha, from 8 – 11 a.m. The event is a collaboration between Metropolitan Community College, Partnership 4 Kids, No More Empty Pots, Together, Seventy-Five North, UNMC/Nebraska Medicine and UWM – and admission is a freewill donation or a non-perishable food item.
Following the breakfast, also at the Highlander, the 2nd Annual MLK Day Luncheon will be held from Noon – 1:30 p.m. Provided in collaboration with Big Mama’s Kitchen and Catering, Aleece’s Sugar Shoppe, Rib Shack Smokehouse, Black Men United and UWM – the event will include a special program featuring Dr. Nikitah Imani, professor of Black Studies at UNO, and a free meal to the first 125 people to pre-register by calling 211 or visiting: UnitedWayMidlands.org/MLKlunch.
The day will continue with a MLK Volunteer Event at the Highlander from 2 – 4 p.m. During the event, presented by UWM’s Good on the Go program, volunteers will assemble 2,000 snack pack kits for Together – the largest number of kits ever assembled at a single Good on the Go event.
And then the activities wrap up with a MLK Day Networking Happy Hour from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Highlander Dining Room, 2112 North 30th Street, Suite 201. The event – hosted by Big Mama’s Kitchen and Catering, Dena’s Place and UWM – will include a cash bar featuring a uniquely curated drink and food menu, along with remarks by author Walter Brooks and a DJ providing music.
“We are so excited to join forces with many of our nonprofit partners and local businesses to honor Dr. King’s work and celebrate the impact it’s still making today,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO, UWM. “And, special thanks to our sponsors Election Systems & Software, KPMG, McGrath North and NP Dodge for their support of the day’s activities.”
