Looking Back at 2020 – 2021

Dear United Way friends and supporters,

Each and every one of you is truly a community hero.

This past year has been an extremely challenging one for the Omaha Council Bluffs metro and our country. The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the physical, mental and financial health of thousands of people–our family members, our friends and our neighbors. Nonprofits all across the metro have been working overtime to meet the community’s increased needs.

But there’s one thing the pandemic hasn’t changed–and that’s this community’s generous and can-do spirit. You’ve been there for United Way and our neighbors every step of the way. And as you’ll see within this recap, your support has empowered us to accomplish some truly remarkable things. Together, we’ve adapted to meet community needs, raised millions of dollars for nonprofits on the front lines and answered thousands of our neighbors’ calls for help and support.

There is still a very long road ahead, but with the heart, determination and generosity of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro, I am confident that we can continue to do the work necessary to get people back on their feet! If nonprofits, government agencies, organizations and people like you continue to work together, we will come out on the other side of this difficult time stronger than ever before.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for caring so deeply about this community. Thank you for your heroic commitment to living united even in a time characterized by isolation. Thank you for giving so generously when hardships abound and resources are limited.

United truly starts with YOU!

With gratitude,

Shawna Forsberg

President and CEO, United Way of the Midlands

Special thanks to Campaign Chairs, Emily and Clark Lauritzen as well as the entire FNBO team for supporting this year’s fundraising campaign. We are so thankful to have worked with such generous and community-minded leadership.

Thousands of people are unable to afford the basic items they need to survive – or they’re just one car accident or health crisis away from being able to do so. With this, COVID-19 created an entirely new demographic of people who are in need, and our nonprofit partners stepped up to help – oftentimes doing much more with much less.

United for a Stronger Community

United Way of the Midlands is working to help our community come back stronger, and become a place where everyone can thrive. Through these dark times, we have learned that our greatest strength is our spirit of community. When we help one another, our community grows stronger, and together we helped thousands of people stay in their homes, feed their families, keep the lights on, and more during the pandemic. Strong communities need a strong United Way. Now more than ever, we need your help to unite for a stronger community and live #CommunityStrong.

We considered these trends in relation to our work and mission, and they shared high praise for UWMs role in facilitating giving, responding to community needs, and more. The Iowa Department of Health has contracted with 211 to serve as the vaccine hotline to help individuals schedule COVID19 vaccinations. Last week, Governor Reynolds announced the partnership with 211 at her news conference. Our 211 team will begin taking calls on March 9. We have hired 25 people as temporary staff members to support this effort.   This was a herculean efforts to get this up and running – special thanks to Pam, Josh, Jen, Eddie, Fratina, Lindsay, Scott, Gloria, and Sonia. 211 begins to take vaccine registrations and scheduling appointments for people in Iowa 65 and older, and on a waiting list.  We are doing this in conjunction with our friends at ISU and Des Moines – stretching our capabilities in sharing call queues, scripting, etc. We have brought on 27 temps (yes, that does more than double our 211 staff) to take these calls – projecting 5,000 calls per day for the first couple of weeks. 211 Expansion Update – With the help of HDR, construction on the 2-1-1 office expansion began yesterday with furniture in the remodel spaces taken down and stored. We were honored to be selected by the Omaha World-Herald to help administer their Goodfellows program, which was established in the 1890s to help those in our community who have fallen on hard times. The partnership allows each organization to do what they do best — Omaha World-Herald shares the rich stories and history of the charity, and UWM raises program dollars and invests them back into the community. UWM manages Goodfellows donations separately and invests them according to Goodfellows’ previous guidelines.

Since our partnership, Goodfellows has raised more than $800,000 to assist local families with housing and utilities. Thank you to our donors! Visit goodfellowsomaha.org to learn more.

Through United Way of the Midlands’ CARES Housing Stability Program, we provided $1.7 million in rental, mortgage and utility assistance to eligible Nebraskans who experienced a COVID-19-related hardship.

Since the start of the pandemic, as many as 23% of residents in Nebraska said they missed a housing payment or were not confident they would make next month’s payment, according to the Census Pulse Poll.

UWM coordinated with other area partners to provide this assistance, including: Metro Area Continuum of Care for the Homeless, Douglas County Community Response, Sarpy County Housing Foundation, Family Housing Advisory Services, Lutheran Family Services, Nebraska Children and Families Foundation and Nebraska Housing Developers Association.

Not all heroes wear capes…Some of them wear headsets!

During the pandemic, our 211 Helpline specialists took calls from thousands of people who didn’t know where to turn next…like Bobby, a father who got sick and fell behind on his mortgage payments; Lisa, who was laid off from her new job; and Sherry who called 2-1-1 because she was worried that removing her dentures after going to the store would give her COVID-19.

Every year on 2/11, or 211 Day, we recognize our Community Resource Specialists for being community heroes who keep you connected to vital resources like safe and stable housing, food pantries, rent and mortgage assistance and so much more.

When you don’t know where to turn, the Nebraska/Southwest Iowa 211 Helpline is there 24/7 to connect you to local programs that can help. Get to know 211 by exploring the *new* Nebraska 211 resource site, the 211 Iowa site or download the *new* 211 NE | SW IA App for Apple or Android today!
