United Way of the Midlands Awards $220,000 Grant to Kids Can Community Center

Kids Can Community Center ( www.KidsCan.org) is pleased to announce it was awarded a $220,000 grant from United Way of the Midlands for fiscal year 2022-23. Thanks to the generosity of the United Way donors, Kids Can children and families in Douglas and Sarpy Counties will continue to receive comprehensive early childhood care and out of school programming. This grant funding will ensure Kids Can continues to grow its services, capacity, and team as they complete their new community center currently under construction.

Kids Can operates two core programs to support student academic success: Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Out-Of-School (OOS). The ECE program is comprised of toddler, preschool, and Pre-K classrooms open every weekday from 6 am. to 6 p.m. Kids Can prepares children (ages 18-months to 5-years-old) for kindergarten. Their new center will age down to infant care for children as young as six weeks old.

Kids Can currently has nine sites offering OOS programs for children ages 5 to 13 years old. The center site at 4860 Q St. offers the widest variety of programs including mentoring, before-school programs, after-school programs, full-day programs when school is closed for conferences/in-service days, and an uninterrupted 12-week summer program. Kids Can also operates seven school-based sites at Mandela, Miller Park, Wakonda, Minne Lusa, Conestoga Magnet, Gilder, and Benson West Elementary Schools, and one additional summer park program.
