OMAHA, Neb. (FOX 42 KPTM) — Omaha Metro is joining the nationwide Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR), a sharing effort to improve reading and early school success for all children.
The initial start for the campaign will be Friday, Aug. 30th at 9:00 in the morning at the Thompson Alumni Center on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus.
The statistics from the Omaha Metro:
- Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is a critical milestone toward high school graduation and success later in life because it marks the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
- Students who aren’t reading on grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school and six times more likely if they have lived in poverty for a year.
CGLR will help so many children succeed in a career, active citizenship, school, graduation and prepare for college.
The campaign is backed by the Metropolitan Omaha Educational Consortium (MOEC), the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties and United Way of the Midlands.
