The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR) is a national, collaborative effort to increase early reading proficiency. The Metropolitan Area Educational Consortium, Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties and United Way of the Midlands partnered to bring the campaign here to Douglas and Sarpy Counties. Currently, there are more than 300 communities across the country participating in the CGLR network.
Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the most important predictors of high school graduation and career success. Yet in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area, more than 5,000 third grade students were not reading at grade level during the 2017-18 academic year. Children who aren’t reading on grade-level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school and six times more likely if they have lived in poverty for a year.
