Moms Deserve Our Thanks, and Our Help.
All over the world, mothers are dedicated to building a better future for their children. And United Way of the Midlands has their backs.
The community spirit that drives our mission is inspired by the boundless love and hard work of mothers everywhere. This Mother’s Day, we want to show our appreciation for the hard work and personal sacrifice of mothers (and grandmothers) around the world.
After all, moms face challenges that no single person—or organization, for that matter—can solve alone. Together, however, we can lift up individuals and entire communities. That is the real thanks our moms deserve, and that is our core mission at United Way of the Midlands. We are proud to include the programs below in our 2016-2018 investment cycle to support mothers, children and families:
Family Inc – Parents as Teachers Program: Promotes optimal early development, learning and health of young children by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers.
Lutheran Family Services – Centers for Healthy Families: Offers services from at least two of our three core competencies: Children Services, Behavioral Health and Community Services.
Nebraska Children’s Home Society – Pathways to the Future: Seeks to impact clients and their families in a lasting and meaningful way by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and community contacts to secure a stable and productive future.
Visiting Nurse Association – Maternal Child Community Home Visitation: Focuses on improving maternal and infant/child health, prevention of infant/child injuries and maltreatment., improving school readiness and family self-sufficiency.
Visiting Nurse Association – Maternal and Infant Home Health Care: Serves at risk families living in poverty by providing nursing, social work and supportive services to enhance health and quality of life for low income women, children and families

Real lives are affected by vital family programs.
When Amber was diagnosed with autism, her mother, Terri, needed some help figuring out the best ways to interact with Amber and to work on her behaviors, both in the home and at school. Through a United Way of the Midlands funded program, Terri was paired with a local counselor who stopped by her home and helped her work with Amber. By learning the best ways to discipline and teaching Amber how to interact with others, Terri was able to build on her relationship with her daughter. Amber is improving in school and in her interactions with other students and teachers, thanks to the program.
