Mike Michalski Joins United Way of the Midlands team as SVP, Finance and Administration

United Way of the Midlands (UWM) is thrilled to welcome Mike Michalski as its new SVP, Finance and Administration. Previously, finance and administration as well as operations and United Way’s 211 Helpline were overseen by UWM’s current COO, Pam Schwalb, who will now devote 100% of her time to overseeing the Helpline and operations.

In his new role, Mike will be responsible for the development of UWM’s financial, human resources and administrative management strategy and will contribute to the attainment of the organization’s strategic goals. In addition, he will develop and implement effective and efficient policies and procedures in both the finance and human resources realms.

Prior to joining UWM, Mike served the previous three years as the Chief Finance Officer for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). He worked directly with the CEO and directors of DHHS on guiding the development, monitoring and management of a four-billion-dollar budget. Mike and his team’s work were critical in ensuring funding was available for the projects, programs and services DHHS provides in supporting the DHHS on mission of Helping People Live Better Lives.

Under Mike’s leadership, DHHS managed the accounting and federal reporting of over 150 grants, including the Medicaid and Foster Care/Child Welfare grants. Other main focuses of Mike’s department were the coordination of audit compliance and communication, budget setting and fiscal note development for proposed legislation.

Prior to the CFO role, Mike spent a year and a half as the Deputy Director of Finance and Program Integrity for the Division of Medicaid within DHHS. Within that role, Mike helped develop and manage the two-billion-dollar budget for the state’s Medicaid program. He also led Medicaid’s Program Integrity unit that implemented controls to reduce fraud, waste and abuse of Medicaid funds.

Mike began his career with Union Pacific and spent 10 years in various roles within the marketing and sales department. He earned his degree in Accounting from the University of Iowa. He resides in Gretna with his wife, Toni, and their three children, Brody, Cora and Paxton.
