Our 2018 Day of Caring

A day of passion, hard work and community

Every weekday, most of us wake up, get ready and go to work. On Day of Caring, hundreds of Omaha-Council Bluffs residents wake up, get ready and go to work with a different sort of purpose – to give back to the community.

More than 1,000 volunteers answered the call of 44 agencies needing help with 90 projects all across our metro last week. They beautified a playground at Child Saving Insitute, read to children after school at Completely Kids, helped stripe a parking lot at Urban League and put together 2,000 learning kits that teach local Girl Scouts about different cultures.

“I am not sure I have ever had such a great, rewarding experience volunteering for a Day of Caring…I hope that we will have this [nonprofit] in the mix of future Day of Caring events to select from because it was truly rewarding and our hearts all grew much bigger after this experience!”

Day of Caring has been a United Way of the Midlands tradition since 2001, encouraging local residents to spend one day helping nonprofits get work done they otherwise might have difficulty accomplishing. Every year we are amazed at how many local businesses encourage their employees to take time out of their work day to do some good in our community.

This year was no different as we celebrate more than 30 workplaces that raised their hands and offered an opportunity for their employees to get involved and make a difference.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska has been a huge Day of Caring supporter over the years, providing over 350 volunteers for this 2018 event. Other stand-out businesses include Omaha Public Power District and First National Bank of Omaha. Not all companies have the capacity these have to offer so much of their workforce to fill needs in our town, but we believe these groups deserve a special shoutout for their commitment to supporting nonprofits in our metro.

“We had a great day.  Kudos to [United Way] and Project Houseworks for the work upfront getting everything set for us to execute.”

While many volunteers come from specific business partners like those listed above, any local resident is encouraged to sign up for Day of Caring. Thank you to those who did so, and we hope you continue to participate in future years – and even sign on friends and family to join in the fun!

Beyond helping local agencies with projects, this day is also a vital opportunity for residents to learn more about community needs from the groups that are doing hands-on work each and every day to make this town a better place to live.

Understanding why some of our neighbors are missing the supports they need to succeed is a vital step towards accomplishing the sweeping change that United Way of the Midlands and our nonprofit and corporate partners are working to help our community make.

Don’t you want to live in #ThatKindofTown where everyone has access to basic needs, education and financial stability supports so they can live productive, healthy and vibrant lives?
